Lean Transformation Framework

The Lean Transformation Framework (developed by the Lean Enterprise Institute) provides a proven approach for managing effective change at the enterprise level. The framework is divided into the dimensions seen in the visual metaphor of the house shown above.

By effectively addressing each dimension, every business can create alignment between its' purpose, processes, and people; accelerate the results from its' lean transformation; foster a world-class culture anchored by continuous improvement and mutual respect; and set the foundation for pursuing operational excellence.

1. Purpose and Vision

✅ What problem are we trying to solve?
✅ Have we clearly defined our organization’s value-driven purpose, or true north?
✅ Where are we now and where are we going?
✅ What are the gaps?
✅ Where will we start?

2. Value Stream System and Process Improvements

✅ How will we improve?
✅ Have we articulated and clearly communicated a strategy that outlines the goals, milestones, and expectations of our lean transformation?
✅ What is the process for implementing and cascading lean systems, principles, and methods in our selected systems/value streams?
✅ What is our control plan for assessing the effectiveness of our lean transformation plan?

3. Capability Development

How will we develop the people?
✅ What capability do we need from our people to achieve our value-driven purpose?
✅ How can we help our people acquire the necessary technical and soft skills to bridge the gap between our current reality and our target conditions?
- What type of training, coaching, involvement, and resources do they need?

4. Management System and Leadership Behaviors

What leadership behaviors and management systems are required?
✅ What are the leadership behaviors necessary to fulfill our value-driven purpose/true north?
✅ What daily habits must be adopted to drive the necessary behaviors?
✅ What type of management system is needed to support both running and supporting the business?
✅ How do we align this management system throughout enterprise so that everyone is rowing in the same direction?

5. Mindset and Assumptions

What basic thinking, mindsets, or fundamental assumptions support or undermine our Lean transformation?
✅ These are the assumptions/mindsets that both encompass the current reality of our culture and inform an ideal state that aligns with our value-driven purpose.

By effectively addressing the five dimensions, an organization’s collective mindset will shift from a culture of stagnation to culture of innovation and endless possibility.
